KESS organised ‘Karshikamela 2019’, a weeklong event from 17th to 23rd June, 2019 at KESS Centre situated at Elanjikulam in Nadathara. In this era of fast culture, where chemical coated vegetables and food items decorate our kitchens, KESS aimed to encourage people to re-visit their available strips of land, be it their frontyards, backyards, balconies or terraces, to develop natural, fresh food products free from poisonous chemicals. The venue of the program was a refreshing sight, where different varieties of plant saplings ranging from money crops to exotic fruits to rare flowers were set in beautiful assortments. The ‘erumadam’, ‘natural swings’ on trees along with the domestic animals such as cattle, goats, poultry, rabbits in the backdrop, were all magnets attracting educational institutions, congregations, families, etc from all over the district. KESS had developed a ‘green army’ – consisting of interested women in the neighbourhood, who were trained about the products, their yield, the farming techniques, the prices etc who presented everything there was to know about what was sold.
The official inauguration was on day 1 where as the closing ceremony which included honouring individuals and institutions that are ‘green fingered’ and followed best ‘eco friendly’ practices. Under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Dr. Joy Vattoly CMI [Secretary, KESS] and Rev. Fr. Jose Eduthan CMI [Superior, KESS], the functions were blessed with the patronage and presence of Rev. Fr. Walter Thelappilly CMI [Provincial, CMI Devamatha Province, Thrissur] along with several renowned dignitaries in the ‘green arena’ such as Mrs. Celina George [Rtd. Additional Director, KAU, Thrissur], Mrs. D. Girija [Registrar, KAU, Thrissur] etc. Various people in the religious, educational, financial and social realms were honoured during this program. Individuals and institutions which took an active role in environment care, natural and organic techniques and eco friendly practices were especially honoured. ‘Jaiva Karshika Smaskridi’ Awards, honouring ‘green friends’, awards for Best Environment Friendly Colleges, School, Institutions, Principals and teachers were also presented. The workers associated to the gardens, farms and nurseries of KESS and its associated regional centres along with the green army were also honoured for their honourable work throughout the years caring for mother earth.June 17, 2019
